Feb. 13, 2011 Gulf State Park

Today dawned another beautiful, sunny day.  We had decided last night that we would ride our bikes in to Gulf Shores and have breakfast at the Waffle House.   Remember when I told you about the Huddle House in Huntsville, Al?  How clean, how delicious the food, how friendly the staff?   Take everything I said about the Huddle House and forget it....you, my friend, will have the Waffle House.   We motored on down the beach road enjoying the numerous bike riders, joggers, people walking and just enjoying being outside in the warmth of the sun.  You could almost feel the excitement in the air.  The trails in the park allow people to take many different routes to several locations throughout the Gulf Shores area. Once in town the city provides riders with designated paths.   With our ride in to town and back we were able to put in 17 miles today.  With Jack's past surgeries and our weight gain from quitting smoking our biking kind of took a back seat to other stuff. We are trying to work our way back to our 50 mile rides.  We'll never be a marathon biker (like Mike M) but our goal is to at least do another 50 miles in a day.  I just may need a new hip after that trip.  We'll see.

Jack met a "neighbor" today who has been coming to this park for almost 4 years now.  He told Jack that although the beaches look pristine, the oil is being sucked out now from 4 feet under the beaches were the oil seems to be concentrated.

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day.  Jack came up with the idea to watch the sunset from the pier tomorrow. This pier is the largest one on the Gulf measuring over a quarter of a mile.  It was destroyed by Katrina, rebuilt and reopened last summer.  Sounds like a plan.  As it is turning out Jack is the one who has an eye for what makes a good picture. So, I'll share today's pics with you now:

Notice the arrow that indicates the bike path.

My ears always are cold.  People in shorts and me in ear muffs.

Notice the Spanish moss hanging from the Oak Trees.

Another part of the trail.

Here is Jack accosting another Armadillo.  You can see his foot in the picture.  He talked me in to touching this little thing today.  Feels like a turtle shell.
