Our first trip from Pine Mountain to the Little White House of FDR

About five miles from the little town of Pine Mountain, Ga. where we are currently staying is a town called Warm Springs, Georgia.  This town is best known for being the home of the Little White House of Franklin Delano Roosevelt the 32nd president of the U.S.  FDR visited this little town of Warm Springs a total of 41 times during his presidency. The reason FDR choose Warm Springs as his home away from the DC white house was the warm 88 degree temperature high mineral content water in Warm Springs. This water allowed him to walk without the aid of braces on his polio riddled legs due to the buoyancy of the water with the high mineral content.  He actually died in the house shown below 67 years ago yesterday while having a portrait painted which was never finished.  The portrait is also shown below.  The pool where he would exercise is also shown but it rarely has water in it but due to the ceremony yesterday they filled the pool.

Facts about Franklin Delano Roosevelt the 32nd president of the United States

His middle name Delano was his mothers maiden name.

Contracted polio in his late 30's which caused paralysis below the waist.  Was almost never photographed below the waist.  Many citizens of the U.S. never knew he couldn't walk.

Was the only person elected to the office of President of the U.S. four times.  He was first elected in 1932 during the depression and was reelected in 1936, 1940 and 1944.

Died April 12, 1945 in the Little White House from a cerebral hemorrhage while having his photo painted.

Grew up in Hyde Park, New York into a very wealthy family.  However, his presidency was known for supporting programs to help the working poor of the country.

His cousin was Theodore Roosevelt who was president before him and this helped him decide to run for president. 

Developed Social Security and the Securities and Exchange Commission to crack down on the crooks on Wall St.

Initiated programs to put people to work during the depression like the CCC, TVA, WPA,  NIRA these programs were collectively called the New Deal. 

Brought electricity to rural America after learning electricity in Warm Springs cost four times more than it did in Washington or New York.

Started the March of Dimes

Insisted the help in Warm Springs who worked at the Little White House join him for meals.  The people in this small town were devastated when their best friend died.

Helped support the U.S. and its allies in winning WWII but wasn't alive to see it end.
