Newburyport Massachusetts

We spent the day in Newburyport, Mass. today since when we were there a couple of days ago we found the city to be so beautiful and what you would think a small town on the coast in Massachusetts would look like.  Newburyport is known for a couple of things.  The first, it is the city where the Coast Guard was established and secondly, according to a local resident, it has the oldest continuously operating airport in the world.  We rode our bikes past the airport and it seems rather close to shutting the doors at least judged by the appearance of things. But then again maybe the oldest airport in the world should look like that.  One thing I really like about this part of the country is the old houses and buildings you see everywhere.  There are many wooden churches still standing with the very tall steeples and city halls that are over one hundred years old in many cases.

Another thing about New England I love is the seafood you can get at just about any restaurant.  I have had clams a couple of times and realized that they don't really have that much flavor.  Today like most days we ate breakfast and didn't have lunch but then after riding our bikes and walking for several hours we were ready to eat supper.  I had researched the eating spots on the internet so in Newburyport we stopped at the Park Lunch restaurant and had to wait about 30-40 minutes to get seated.  Hulio had pizza (she has had her fill of seafood for a while) and I had the shrimp dinner.  They brought me a plate of lightly breaded fried shrimp that overflowed the plate for $15.99.  I was hungry and I had a hard time eating all of those shrimp and that's one seafood Huli will not help me eat.

I took a few pictures of the rv park we are staying in this week.  It has about 50 spaces all surrounding a big loop where the drive goes in one side and out the other.  It's typical of rv parks we have stayed at.  For example, there is a Prevost motor home that sells for $1.2 million sitting next to a fold up tent camper that you could buy for $3 thousand and then everything in between.  The park has a very nice heated pool and all the facilities that we need which include 50 amp electric, sewer, water and cable tv.  I have our satellite antenna up but we can only pick up two of the three Dish network satellites due to the trees.  I brought a portable dish but since we have cable I didn't bother to set it up. The only reason I put the roof satellite up is the local cable doesn't have any national news stations.  The only real downside with this park is they advertise a dog park as a real nice feature of the park but it is really just a small fenced in area with mud and gravel.  This is the only real place within the parks for the dogs to use so we take them in the truck down the street to a field where we let them off the leases.  So all in all it's a very nice place to spend a week.

Another thing we are discovering in our travels is every part of the country seems to have their own unique pests.  In Indiana we have the mosquito's, in Florida and other southern states they have the No See Ums.  Well in Massachusetts they have horse flies that they call Greenheads.  And what do you know the only thing that seems to repel them is Avon Skin So Soft just like with the No See Ums.  The only bad thing about using the Skin So Soft, according to the locals, is the sun will cook you in the summer even if you use sun block.  These horse flies are so bad that a sign at the entrance of the national park said "devilish Greenheads are here no refunds".

Saturday we are going to the pool and stick around the rv most of the day so we may not have any new pictures to post but we'll see.  I am going to make spaghetti and meatballs for Saturday supper.
