Our Trip to Key West on February 20, 2012

We thought once we left the mainland of Florida we were close to being in Key West.  Well, our son Gabe warned us and he was right,  we still had a long way to go.  Hwy 1 takes you from Homestead, which is the southern most city of the mainland of Florida, to Key West and it's primarily a two lane road for about 130 miles.  It takes you through seven small towns, the first being Key Largo, and across  many bridges one measuring seven miles long.  The speed limit varies from 35 to 55 miles an hour so it takes quite a while to cover this last 130 or so miles.  I took these pictures below today while driving.  Janet should post her pictures tomorrow which are much better.

One cool thing about the Sheraton hotel we are staying at and Key West in general is how pet friendly they are.  I made the reservations at this Sheraton hotel since I learned they would allow the dogs to stay with us.  While checking in Janet ask the front desk where we should walk the dogs and the lady told her any where we wanted.  She then explained where the court yard was and other grass areas around the hotel.  They expect you to clean up after your pet but that's almost a given any where you go.  Even though the hotel was fairly expensive (that's the case for Key West hotels in general)  I still wondered what it would be like but we were very pleasantly surprised.  The room and the grounds around the hotel are beautiful and we hope to post some pictures tomorrow.  For those of you familiar with Key West we are right across the street from Smathers Beach on Roosevelt Blvd.  We brought our bicycles so we should be able to see the entire area over the next three days before leaving on Friday.

This picture and some others show the old road next to the new one.
