After the ride we stopped at the Jekyll Resort Club for refreshments and talked to the bar tender who lived on the Island. He told us all of the residential housing was built between 1959 and 1964. There are about 800 people who live on the island. In 1967 they stopped issuing building permits on the Island for residential purposes. While people own the houses the ground is owned by the state of Georgia and is leased to the home owners on 99 year leases. About 35% of the island is built up leaving the other two thirds in its natural state.
Well the Big 10 as well as Butler and ND is looking good so far in the NCAA tourney. In the game I am watching now it appears Illinois is handling UNLV fairly easily which seems to be surprising the announcers of the game.
Later in the evening we went to a buffet style restaurant in Brunswick which featured seafood. It was very good and I ate too much. Somehow I need to bike more than I eat and drink but as of now I don't think that is happening.
Wishing she had packed that white croquet outfit. |
The first transcontenential telephone call was made from Jekyll Island. |
Most residential housing looks similar to these houses here. |
Took a quick ride through the campground on the island |
It's hard to make out but the light house on St. Simon Island can be seen in the distance |
On this bench on Friday March 18, 2011 I gave Huli the big pickle. |
She gave me the little pickle and we both had turkey sandwiches. |
About two thirds of the bike trip around the island was done of a path like this one. The balance was on trails going through the woods or along the beach. |
A wedding ceremony was taking place as we rode by |
The next few photos were taken around the village with many being around and inside the Jekyll Resort Club Hotel.
The wild boars head above the mantle adds a nice touch doesn't it? |
Much of the trails through the wooded area look like this. |
