Tuesday March 15th St. Simons Island

We loaded the bikes and spent the better part of the day on St. Simons Island.  We couldn't have hand picked a more beautiful, sunny day.  Perfect. St. Simons Island provides miles of paved bike paths and tons of things to see and do.  We did discover something though that proved to be a form of hysterical laughter for us.  Georgia has a state law that says if a pedestrian enters a crosswalk all vehicles must stop.  We didn't know it at the time but upon coming to a crosswalk I pushed the button that would allow us to cross the street on our bikes.  Instantaneously, cars came to a screeching halt, one of them burning a little rubber. It struck both of us as hilarious (we are easily entertained) and Jack said we should just "piss" with anyone driving a car costing more than $50,000.00 and push the button at the last second.   I just know an arrest of some kind is in our future.  I can feel it.

A couple of things I learned about Brunswick today. The federal government's training facility headquarters (for Homeland Security) is located just north of the city. The last snow accumulation in Brunswick, Georgia was back in 1989.  They average about 49 inches of rain each year.  From the mid 1980's through 1994, the Hanlin Group, who managed a chemical plant here knowingly and continually dumped 150 short tons of mercury in to a creek poisoning fish, bird, crabs, etc that came in contact with the waters surrounding the facility.  The company and it's executives were convicted but I could not find out who or when.  Brunswick is also the 6th busiest automobile port in the United States. It is the primary export port for Ford and General Motors.   Brunswick is a fun vibrant area with it's #1 industry being tourism.  I can certainly understand why.  Love it!  Hope you enjoy Jack's pictures.

Shops line both sides of the main street in the village area which is in the southern part of the island.
Brogens was where we did lunch today.  Nice place and great food.

The bar tender said one of the waitresses just went up to the black board and started drawing and he said in no time this is what she drew.  Some people are so gifted it is unreal.

Every time I see this tree I take a picture of it.  I don't think the pictures really do it justice.  It is awesome.

This is a huge resort hotel on St. Simons where you can get some R&R for about $300 per night.  I don't think that includes the Royal Treatment though and I bet that's really going to cost you.
This is just a couple of many buildings for the King and Prince resort.

Can you tell we don't get a chance to see bamboo grow in Indiana.

Believe it or not this is the pier of a private residence.  They do this to get beyond the marsh where they can dock a boat.
The Live Oaks and Spanish Moss in this park provided a canopy over the entire area.  Doesn't come through as dramatic in pictures as it does when you are there.
